mostly everyone will agree that his amps when he plays live are 'stock amps". Ive wondered this for years now.......and get the same response about his amps when he plays live.
now his own personal amps in his home studio......HMMmmm......i bet he doesnt use the same tubes that came in that amp stock. im sure one point or another he has changed the tubes, and went for which ever brand his tech could get at the time.
or maybe when he needs a retube, he just has carvin ship him free ones.......in that case, yeah, he uses stock tubes.
i dont know..............but the world is dying to know............

So where's the other five?8bigtubes wrote:As far as tubes are concerned, go with what sounds best to YOU. Personally, I have Ruby EL34BSTR's in my Legacy and I have Shuguang 9th gen AX7's in V1 and V2.

yeah carvin legacy are great amps, but when he did clinics in russia he used "good ole'" marshalls and oddly enough he sounded just as good..coincidence?
and what about the Fender he uses for clean sounds on this last tour do you all think it's "just" to add a different sound?
My theory is he must have a few other brands in the studio that he uses.
Or in other words, endorsement vs reality.

I believe he using stock Legacy's because when I played Legacy some people said you got exact Steve Vai sound with this amp.
Don't forget tone is in your head and fingers.

Steve has said that if he could have just one amp, the Legacy has it all.lydian2000 wrote: My theory is he must have a few other brands in the studio that he uses.

It's not perfect, it doesn't do everything, but as a single amp it covers alot of ground.
Of course, Steve can has as many amps as he wants, so he does.
If it was all a question of the endorsement, you would never hear a word about other amps used on a recording, and most certainly not see a Fender amp on stage next to Steve. If it was all about the endorsement, the Fender would either be hidden backstage or placed in a Legacy enclosure to fool us all...
I'm using EH's in the other 3 preamp slotsjoshua202020 wrote:So where's the other five?8bigtubes wrote:As far as tubes are concerned, go with what sounds best to YOU. Personally, I have Ruby EL34BSTR's in my Legacy and I have Shuguang 9th gen AX7's in V1 and V2.
I have a Legacy half stack and the thing about the Legacy is that it is a really loud amp, and you must turn it up to at least 4-5 before you get that glorious tone out of it.
at those volumes I guarantee that you will bury any drummer out there.
It is my understanding that Steve does indeed use stock groove tubes in his Legacies.
He runs the volume between 6-7.

When I bought my Legacy 2.5 years ago it came with EHs all the way around. I have stayed with that, EH 12AX7s and EH EL34s. The EH 12AX7s have a real good mid range to them which is what I'm looking for. The GT 12AX7s have alot less mid range. In fact, there is a great website that has all kinds of info on different tubes for amps. www.thetubestore.com
Yes, you can purchase tubes from there and don't worry I don't work for the company. I'm a customer who buys my tubes from them and all I'm saying is that they have a great selection!
