carvin or mesa
dude...since you are in Pasadena....if it's CA...then you are lucky...why not drive down to Sunset Blvd. and try both amps.....both Carvin and Mesa are just next door to each other....and across the street is Guitar Center...maybe they have some 2nd hadn boutique amps there too...if you are lucky.

Welcome to the "Get rid of your shitty crate club"! Congrats my friend you are on the road to happiness. Anyways, I agree with tambokgt, you should play both if you have the chance. I've never liked Mesa's, to me they sound kind of brittle and ear peircing. Don't try out just two brands either. Look, experiment, don't make a decision unless you're 100% sure. And Finally, don't base your final decision on what people on a message board say. It's all about YOUR ears.
the carvin store has these neat little cubicles with all their amps lined up and you just walkk in, let them know what you want to try, and they'll pop you right in, no timelimit or people waiting impatiantly or anything, very cool. If you're not absolutely set on mesa or carvin, I'd really suggest trying out the B52 line of tube amps, those are a lot cheaper and in my opinion better than those mesas and carvins that a re more expensive.
