What I have a problem with is the distinction made here between 'techniques' and music.
'Picking' is a technique. Technique of some sort is necessary in order to create any form of music.
Technique is a means that enables expression. It surely becomes a problem when technique is primarily used for its' own sake?
I don't think Vai thinks of his music in technical terms. It seems technical to most guitarists, but I think he is beyond the technique, and is at the level of expression.
Hence I asked 'what difference does it make'.

hmm, for me he´s more an entertainer than a musician. I saw him once, and I felt more entertained than "satisfied" hehe
