My favorites:
Eddie Van Halen- my favorite guitar player and the reason why I started playing, amazing feel and an incredible ability to write cool riffs
Steve Vai- my 2nd favorite guitar player, Steve is king of the instrumental world, and I believe he is the best all-around guitarist/musician "technically speaking"
Joe Satriani- what guitar player doesn't like Joe?
John Petrucci- he's done some really cool stuff, and his playing ability is incredible
Zakk Wylde- great metal guitarist, very raw
Slash- wrote some excellent riffs and solos with GNR, great stuff
Yngwie Malmsteen- the guy is a mouth, but he can definitely tear it up, but to me he's just a shredder really and nothin more than fast lines, but his stuff is still fun to listen to and he has written some cool songs
Jimi Hendrix- his playing ability isn't technically as outstanding as the other players, but he played with a lot of feel
Vitto Brato- I hope I spelled his name right, this guy is one of the most under-rated guitar players I've heard, I think of him as EVH part 2
Ted Nugent- I love Ted's raw approach, and while his music is quite simple he can tear it up when he wants to, I enjoy listening to him

Steve Vai is the best guitar player to ever live in my opinon, there is overall balance with technical skill and how the songs are written. I would say if I grew up in the Late 70s and such it probably would have been EVH , and he is still a great player. I saw him last summer with Van Halen for their short tour they did in the US. Anyway Joe and Yngwie are basically going down the list in a top 5 fashion with Slash to end it. But lets all be honest here, Vai is the most innovative out of all them, he tries to go beyond his original material. EVH never did a lot of solo work which I think was a huge mistake, he could have had a huge solo career, anyway I think there will be others to come in the future that might live up to these guys but there will never be another Vai, Satriani, EVH, Yngwie, Slash ever again.
