dark.....sort of...........i would say it has a "smoother" sounding distortion. Not as much of a "chain saw buzz" sounding distortion as you would associate with most hi-gain amps.........this amp has a more smoother tone.

the best power tubes ive had in my Legacy were the Ruby el34B-STR

sounds BIG, crunchy, bright.....and lots of low end boom. Kinda sounds like a 6L6 tube, with el34 type "bark" and mids.........

yeah..........i own the DS-1 UlTRA...........and it rocks! when you flip the switch to "ultra" mode, it acts more of a older "tube screamer/OD", that a distortion pedal.
