I have heard a lot of solos in my days on this planet. I have also heard a lot of "Great" solos.
Steve Vai should have all the top 10.

Look at his butt, he must totaly work out...
Seriously though, Guthrie is a beast on guitar.

Did Steve have anything to do with "A lil' aint enough"?
Every time I hear that song "A lil' aint enough" I hear Vai-isms all over it. I am wondering if this is something Steve may have worked on before he quit DLR.
There are probably contractual reasons why Steve wouldn't be able to say yes or no, but what is the speculation?

Re: Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards (album, podcasts ect)
"The Golden Room" is my favorite from the album. It's more about the production than the pure rip your face off soloing, it is just one of those trance songs that sound freaking great.

Re: Counterpoint vs. Non-scalar Playing
Counterpoint has nothing to do with "Non-scalar" playing. They are mutualy exclusive. "Counterpoint" is two or more notes that move independently of each other either rythmicaly or diatonicaly or both. "Non-Scalar" typicaly means going outside the scale by choosing notes that are not in direct order.

Re: How much bend to break a string?
I can't break strings by bending them. I can litteraly bend them as far as I possibly can and they don't break.
That is assuming they are fairly new string of course...

Re: New Steve interview
So which of you guys are the "Tone Deaf" ones?
And by the way Steve, why don't you just start the questions part by spending 1 minute to tell the whole audience what strings, picks, pickups, cables, etc you use? That way you won't get the "stupid" questions. Just for future reference

Re: modes..
It's all about the chords.... If I play C Ioanian or A Aeolian without a chord behind it, they sound exactly the same. They have the same notes, CDEFGAB. However, if I play a Cmajor under it it will sound Happy, if I play an A Minor under it it will sound sad. In other words, the chords are what mak...

Re: Learning the modes
The best way to learn this is, realise that there are only 12 modes. They are called, A, A#(Bflat), B, C, C#(Dflat), D, D#(Eflat), E, F, F#(Gflat), G and G#(Aflat)- Ionian (The Major Scales). This means that no matter which "mode" you are playing in you are really just playing in the Major key that ...

Re: G3 Denver 'Juice' Tapping
I don't think it sounds cooler, but it is much easier to play. From what I remember he does his standard tap one note while sliding the fret hand down the strings to other notes. Then he does that taping lick where he taps on one string and pulls off two notes then just pulls off two notes on the ne...

Re: A New Jem????
What's the difference? If you play a JEM it already has Vai's name all over it! Not physicaly, but everyone knows that is a VAI guitar. It is designed by Vai, it is played by Vai and it just looks like Vai. And is that logo really Vai's name? It just looks like symbols to me...is it some arabic lang...

Re: what is the point of the green tape on the neck pickups?
I never had this ever happen in all my years (18) of playing guitar untill about six months ago. I have no idea what i did, but I was in the middle of playing something and I noticed my high E was screwed up sounding so I look down and sure enough it was hung under the pickup. Hasn't happened since....

Re: Two Steve strats
Can you even call those Strats? Franken-strats maybe.... The one on the left has a head stock that I have never seen on any strat, not to mention the Floyd Rose and Humbucker(Which I know they make strats with humbuckers and floyds now, but I don't think they did back then...I guess I could be wrong...

After giving the album ONE listen, I didn't hear anything good. There was nothing that struck me as "Wow, cool tune!". In fact, I heard some very sloppy playing and his solos, as usual these days, sound improvised on the spot using his basic three string arps and running scales. I have read great re...
